We recently asked 875 Fly.com and Travelzoo users where they would most like to travel to in 2013 if money and time were no object. And the results are in.

At the top of America’s “wish list” is Italy – no doubt thanks to the images of romance, history, fine food and great wine that the destination often conjures up in the mind.

Certainly Italy is one of my favorite countries to visit. And Rome and the Amalfi Coast are, perhaps, my most favorite Italian destinations. (Hmmm, I feel another destination blog starting to germinate)…

2013 Travel Resolutions Survey Results

But back to the survey: Italy’s No. 1 spot was closely followed by Australia and then New Zealand. However Europe did sweep in for additional appearances in the Top 5, with the United Kingdom and France tying for fourth place. Ireland and Spain also scored honorable seventh and eighth positions (respectively) in the Top 10. Although it has to be said that twice as many survey respondents chose Italy over the United Kingdom and France combined.

2013 Top 10 Most Desired Countries
1. Italy
2. Australia
3. New Zealand
4. United Kingdom (Tie)
4. France (Tie)
6. United States
7. Ireland
8. Spain
9. Fiji
10. South Africa

At a regional level, Europe and Oceania accounted for nearly 60% of all responses. Paris or French Polynesia anyone?

However traveling to far off lands certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. In fact the survey revealed that many Americans still prefer to visit and explore the many wonders of their own country. As a region, North America only narrowly missed out on Asia’s third place. And the United States ranked sixth, as one of the most desired countries in the world.

In Asia, India edged out other countries to take the top spot for that region. The combined popularity of India, Japan, Thailand, China and Vietnam also helped propel Asia to be the third most desired region to visit. However, no individual Asian country was able to secure a spot among the Top 10 most desired destinations.

Of the other regions, Brazil beat Peru for the No. 1 position among South American countries, and Israel narrowly beat Turkey as the most desired Middle Eastern destination.

In the Caribbean, Jamaica edged out the US Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos and the Bahamas, while Costa Rica and South Africa were the clear winners for Central America and Africa, respectively.

I couldn’t agree more with this list of wants the only thing really keeping me from going to the 2nd and 3rd places on your list is the travel time. It’s all I can do to fly to Italy and knowing NZ and Australia are twice as long makes me cringe. Also I really like archeology a lot and don’t think there is much of that in those places but that wouldn’t really stop me from going there.

Look at Australia and New Zealand go! I guess Hobbits and the fact Australia now ranks as the No2 place to be born have contributed to this?http://www.economist.com/news/21566430-where-be-born-2013-lottery-life
