Each week, as part of our Share Your Travel Love Bug competition, we hope to profile a different destination based on the travel experience of an actual Fly.com user. This next installment comes from Elisabeth Barker in New York.
Where did you fly to?
Why did you want to visit that destination?
My boyfriend has cousins in Milan, so we used that as our start and endpoint for exploring Italy. From Milan, we took the train to Venice, Florence and Rome.
What was the Fly.com deal that got you there?
I booked a Fly.com deal for $609 roundtrip to Milan from Newark.
How did you find your flight deal?
From a Travelzoo Newsflash that featured the Fly.com Milan airfare deal.
What was the highlight of your visit?
My favorite city in Italy was Florence. I absolutely loved seeing the Statue of David up close, devouring the Tuscan cuisine and climbing to the top of the Duomo for a bird’s-eye view of the city and countryside.
Which hotel did you stay at?
We used AirBNB to book bed and breakfast rooms and apartments when not staying with family.
What activities would you recommend to first time visitors?
For the best photos, go up! Don’t let a few hundred stairs in cathedrals or towers, or a hike up a hillside stand between you and unforgettable – and often unique — views. Also eat everything you can. I’m not a foodie, but I did discover a new favorite cheese, pasta dish and wine during our trip.
What is the one piece of advice you would share with other travelers visiting that destination?
Traveling through Italy by train was a great way to see more than one city, without the expense and hassle of renting a car (you must be able to drive a manual in Italy, plus parking is non-existent and the roads are scary-narrow). Traveling by train gave us the chance to kick back, relax and enjoy the view. We also met fellow travelers and locals on board who gave us advice not found in guide books.
Is there anything else you would like to add about your experience?
Instead of purchasing tickets at the train station, look for a discounted train tickets online the night before traveling. I found 2-for-1 tickets on the ItaliaRail high speed line, Frecciarossa (traveling at 360km/h, 220mph), that got us back to Milan from Rome in only three hours.

Best Time To Visit: Milan’s peak season, like most of Italy, is the summer with its long days and pleasantly comfortable evenings. Their summers typically stretches into September. To avoid crowds, spring is the best time, especially May, when temperatures tend to peak in the low 70s and the water can be warm enough to take a dip.
