A sun-drenched island paradise in the South Pacific
Fiji is an archipelago of more than 300 islands and a few hundred tiny islets, located in the South Pacific. Around a third of the main island group is inhabited, of which the main two are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The Fijian capital Suva is located on Viti Levu, the largest island in the Archipelago. The rugged volcanic interior of Viti Levu is dominated by the towering Mount Tomanivi, the volcanic heart of the islands, which is surrounded by verdant forested plains and beautiful sandy coastline. The Fijians are warm and friendly people, whose fascinating cultural heritage blends the traditional customs of the indigenous islanders with European, Chinese and Indian influences. A holiday in Fiji is a tremendously relaxing experience, and a refreshing escape from the pace of modern life.
Why Go?
Stunning palm-lined beaches beneath endless blue skies, with the blissful sound of the waves gently lapping the sand; this is what greets visitors who travel the many thousands of miles to the Fijian islands, and the superlative beauty of Fiji and its people gives many a heartfelt desire to stay.
When to Go?
The Fijian islands are blessed with long, hot sunny days all year round, so Fiji holidays can be enjoyed at any time, but the winter is probably the best time to go. The winter in Fiji lasts from late April to October, at which time there is less rainfall than in the more humid summer months and the average temperatures are slightly lower, although still well into the balmy twenties.
How to get there?
Given its South Pacific location there are obviously no direct flights to Fiji, but there are lots of options for connecting flights to Fiji’s main airport hub on Viti Levu, Nadi International (NAN), as well as flights to Nausori International (SUV), which is 30 minutes from the capital. You can get connecting flights to Fiji from Pacific Rim airports such as Sydney (SYD), Auckland (AKL) and Tokyo Narita (NRT), or from Los Angeles (LAX).
Must see
The Fijian capital Suva is an attractive and surprisingly cosmopolitan little harbour city, with an interesting blend of modern buildings and Victorian colonial architecture. The Fiji Museum, located in the capital’s botanical gardens, contains archaeological exhibitions of ancient artefacts and cultural relics, and even the rudder from the famous HMS Bounty. Head down to the beach, grab a cocktail and marvel at some quite breathtaking sunrises and sunsets from a position of absolute relaxation.
