Why Go?
Prepare to be surprised by what Latvia has to offer. Relax on the beach at the resort areas overlooking the Baltic Sea, get close to nature on a hiking trip or explore the cities and towns to marvel at exceptional examples of Art Nouveau architecture.
When to Go?
Latvia has a humid and continental climate with temperate conditions influenced by the Baltic Sea. The winter months can be very cold and Latvia’s proximity to Russia and the north ensures heavy snowfall and biting winds. Tourists tend to arrive in the warm summer months - June and August are most popular with seasonal events and activities. July is known as the rainy season so those travelling during this time should remember waterproof clothing.
How to get there?
Latvia is served by three international airports; Riga Airport (RIX), Liepāja International Airport (LPX) and Ventspils Airport (VNT). Direct flights are available from Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Bristol with Ryanair; the journey takes approximately three hours to the capital city. Flights to other Baltic countries and throughout Europe run daily from Riga including Warsaw, Venice, Helsinki and Moscow.
Must see
No trip to Latvia would be complete without visiting the magnificent Gauja Valley; hike through the nature park and enjoy a picnic in the woods. Explore medieval ruins and old castle walls. Part of a National Park, it is a busy place during the summer; spring is a more peaceful time with smaller crowds. Adventurous travellers can take part in many outdoor pursuits including canoeing, biking, skiing and even bungee jumping.
