A charismatic and passionate island
Cuba is the Caribbean’s largest island and lies just 90 miles south of Florida. Famed for its revolutionary leaders and ongoing spat with the USA, it is easy to be captivated by this spirited country. Until 1990 Cuba received considerable Soviet subsidies, but once these were withdrawn the country slid into deep financial crisis. Tourism is now fuelling the country’s economy and regeneration is being carried out in the towns, especially in the capital, Havana. Cuba has much to offer: beautiful beaches, wonderful architecture, a rich culture and palpable energy. Havana is like nowhere else - 1950s Chevy taxis, iconic monuments, shady plazas, bars and restaurants that have remained unchanged in decades. The popular resorts of Varadero and Holguin boast soft white sandy beaches and azure waters set against a backdrop of all-inclusive modern hotels. Jibacoa and Guardalavaca offer a quieter beach experience and snorkelling in the excellent coral reefs.
Why Go?
Cuba is an enchanting country with a unique and vibrant atmosphere. Its rich history and culture, wonderful colonial architecture, sunny climate, striking retro features, interesting historic towns, fine sandy beaches and lively Son music provide a diverse and rewarding visit.
When to Go?
Cuba enjoys year-round warm weather with a rainy season from May to October, making November to April the best times to visit. Hurricanes do hit Cuba occasionally and these tend to be in September and October. December and January are Havana’s busiest times, as are July and August. A lovely tropical climate ensures that daytime temperatures rarely drop below 25C.
How to get there?
Direct flights are available from London to Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport (HAV). Flights tend to be more expensive in December, January, July and August, as well as Easter. There are also direct flights from London and Manchester into Juan G Gomez International Airport in Varadero - which is often the cheapest airport to fly into - along with Holguin’s Frank Pais Airport and Santa Clara Airport. Alternatively, Cayo Coco has direct flights from Glasgow.
Must see
Take time away from your hotel or beach to explore Havana’s old town and enjoy a Mojito at La Bodeguita del Medio, Ernest Hemingway’s favourite haunt. Visit charming Baracoa, Cuba’s first capital and the reputed setting of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s A Hundred Years of Solitude. Go to the lovely small town of Trinidad with its cobbled streets and painted houses. Stay in a Casa Particular - people rent rooms in their houses and a stay in a Cuban household is a rewarding experience, especially if you speak some Spanish.
