Fly.com Announces Launch of Real-Time Flight Deals Through Twitter

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., January 6, 2010 Fly.com™, the world’s easiest-to-use airfare search engine, today announced the launch of real-time fare alerts on Twitter for 20 U.S. metropolitan areas, each with its own specific handle (e.g., fare alerts for San Francisco are tweeted via @SFfares). The company plans to introduce an additional 20 metros and their accompanying Twitter handles in the coming weeks.
 
Fly.com quietly released the first series of city-specific Twitter handles over the last couple of weeks, including Los Angeles; San Francisco; Washington D.C.; New York City; Minneapolis; Denver; Boston; Miami; Atlanta; Chicago; Phoenix; Houston; Seattle and Portlandwhich have already built significant follower bases. These Twitter alerts cover entire metropolitan areas; @LAfares, for example, includes deals for flights departing from all five Los Angeles-area airports, including LAX, BUR, ONT, SNA and BUR.
 
“The access we have to real-time fares and inventory instantly lets us see when fares change, so it’s a natural next step to make the great deals we come across known to our users via Twitter,” said Brian Clark, general manager, Fly.com. “That said, we don’t want to spam people with every good deal. Our goal is to share only those that are the best or most unique, from our searches.”
 
The deals are found through a two-step approach: Fly.com staff carefully monitors in real time the airfare searches that users perform and then mines those results to determine the best deals in the region. The frequency of the tweets varies by metro area, but each one averages about three tweets per week.
