Southwest Airlines was founded close to 50 years ago on the simple principle that a customer is always king. Founded by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher in 1971 with Lamar Muse as the President, Southwest Airlines’ original business plan was made up of a triangle drawn on a cocktail napkin – three lines that connected Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. A 750-plane strong fleet, it is all Boeing 737s. Its headquarters are in Dallas, Texas. Southwest’s new logo is the iconic tri-color heart in red, gold and blue. Southwest Airlines allows its passengers to travel with one carry-on bag with dimensions not exceeding 25 x 41 x 61 cm and one small personal item such as a ladies’ purse, laptop case, or briefcase with dimensions not exceeding 47 x 22 x 34 cm.

Southwest Airlines allows all its passengers two free checked-in bags, with each weighing not more than 23 kg and having overall dimensions not more than 158 cm.

Southwest Airlines allows small vaccinated dogs and cats to travel in the cabin of all domestic flights. Pets are not allowed onboard any international flights. Southwest Airlines booking for pets are made on a first-come, first-served basis as typically only six pets are allowed to travel per flight with the limit of one pet per passenger. Each pet is charged a pet fare of $95 each way.

All children between the ages of 5-11 must avail the airline’s Unaccompanied Minor Service. Unaccompanied Minor Service is not offered on international flights. An Unaccompanied Minor fee of $50 is charged each way.

In-flight Amenities

All cabins have recently undergone refurbishing to make them more eco-friendly, cost-effective and comfortable. There is more legroom as well, and the cushions offer better lumbar support. The inflight crew is always there to help, with warm, friendly and prompt service. Complimentary pretzels and non-alcoholic beverages are offered, and alcohol may be purchased onboard. Longer flights offer additional snacks as well. The airline’s in-flight magazine ‘SouthWest: The Magazine’ boasts millions of readers and explores a variety of topics, from pop culture to food and drinks, to sports and personal technology. The inflight entertainment options are free, and can be accessed by downloading the Southwest app on the passengers’ personal devices. There is an unparalleled range of latest movies, music and TV shows. Messaging services for WhatsApp and iMessage are available, and Wi-Fi can be purchased at $8 a day per device.

Web Check-In:

Southwest Airlines offers its passengers the facility of web check-in which opens 24 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure and closes 60 minutes before the scheduled departure. Passengers can select their preferred seats, print their boarding passes in advance and enjoy a hassle-free experience at the airport.
