Tour the Royal Way of Gdansk

Located in northern Poland on the Baltic Coast, Gdansk is a city influenced by its principal position as the country’s main seaport. Museums and exhibitions chart Gdansk’s history as both a political force and maritime pioneer. Visit the Gdansk Nowy Port Lighthouse for sweeping views over the coastline, marvel over the exotic marine life at the city aquarium and learn more about Gdansk at the National Museum. For a whistle-stop tour of the city, take a tram through the streets of the old city centre out to the contemporary area of universities and shopping centres. Wander along the Ulica Dluga and Dlugi Targ streets, home to some of the finest examples of preserved architecture. Large ornate gates flank each end of the route known as the Royal Way; visitors can enjoy taking in sights such as the Wieza Wiezienna prison tower and Zlota Kamienica, the Golden House. Relax by the 16th century Neptune Fountain and watch the people as they pass.

      Why Go?
Travel to Gdansk and discover a city of architectural significance, ancient monuments and a past steeped in maritime history. With 14 universities Gdansk is a centre for education in Poland, join the crowds in some of the liveliest bars and clubs or relax in the city park with a picnic.

      When To Go?
Gdansk is characterised by a temperate and maritime climate of dull cold winters and mild summer months. Rainfall is particularly common in Poland with showers and thunderstorms appearing suddenly. Pack warm clothing as the temperatures drop at night. July and August are considered the best months to travel to Gdansk for bright, fairly warm weather and average temperatures reaching 19°C.

      How To Get There?
Gdansk is served by Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport located 12km (around 7.5 miles) from the city centre. Direct flights from the UK including Glasgow Prestwick, Liverpool and London Luton are available with Wizz Air. Ryanair offers direct flights to Gdansk from London Stansted. Passengers can reach downtown Gdansk by taxi and shuttle bus located outside the terminal building. A PKP Intercity rail service provides a major rail route throughout Poland and other European cities.

      Must See
Gdansk is situated at the mouth of the Motlawa River; enjoy a relaxing boat tour along the estuary and watch small vessels as they pass. Stroll through the historical district and explore the ancient buildings including the 15th century Bazylika Mariacka, the largest brick church in the world - the Baroque style Royal Chapel - built for King John III Sobieski, and climb the Town Hall spire to see gilded sculptures in memory of King Sigismund II Augustus. Long, light summer nights mean crowds of young students can be found on the streets. Try an underground club or terraced bar or sample the classics at the opera house.
