Famous for stunning beaches, glitzy mansions, and sizzling South Beach
nightlife, Miami attracts visitors from around the world. And in many
ways, its proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean delivers an
international flair to city life. It's common to hear English, Spanish,
Creole and more languages.
Dozens of new high-rises were built in the construction boom of the early 2000s, but this hip area also boasts Art Deco hotels and other historic landmarks.
Set along the Atlantic Ocean, Miami offers the quintessential beach vacation any time of the year. It's also home to one of the most noteworthy hot spots in the U.S. - South Beach. Trendy clubs, restaurants and hotels on this island consistently rank among the top nationally.
Beyond the posh parties and swanky hotels, Miami remains a haven for nature lovers. Snorkeling, diving, kayaking and other watersports are easily accessible.
When to Go
In winter, expect throngs of visitors - from "snowbirds" escaping the north's winter weather, to a young, hip crowd flocking to the Spring Break scene. Tourism hits its annual high in March to early April, so hotel rates are highest during that time. Avoid crowds and save money by coming in the summer. Humidity reaches its peak, but the hot temperatures make a dip in the ocean even more exhilarating.
How to Get There
More than 45 passenger airlines fly into and out of Miami International Airport, ranked as one of the busiest airports in the world. American, Delta and Continental are top carriers within the U.S. From the airport, take a taxi to downtown Miami (about 15-20 minutes) or to South Beach (about 25-30 minutes).
Things to Do
South Beach/Ocean Drive: As the most likely place in Miami to see celebrities, this famous area offers a see-and-be-seen beach vibe and nightlife. The street closest to the water, Ocean Drive, is home to the mansion of the late Italian designer Gianni Versace - now a favorite tourist spot for photos. Walk north to Lincoln Road, and check out its designer shops and upscale restaurants.
Crandon Beach Park: Just south of downtown Miami, the park offers a relaxing, laid-back alternative to South Beach's crowds. And it earned acclaim: Parenting and Family Fun magazines have named it one of the best beaches in America. Enjoy the nearby marina, playground and watersports schools.
