Stroll through the lively medina of Fez

Located in the Atlas Mountains, Fez is the third largest city in Morocco. Its status as an imperial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site along with ancient architecture and monuments ensure its popularity as a holiday destination. Walk along the banks of the Fez River running the length of the city; watch locals chat and call to one another from the houses that line the route. Fez is comprised of three distinctive districts; Fes-Jdid, Fes el Bali and the Ville Nouvelle. Fes el Bali is the old walled area of the city and is the location for most of Fez’s important architecture. Take in sights such as the 17th century Aben Danan Synagogue and the shrine of the patron saint of Fez, Moulay Idriss II. Tour the Jewish quarter within Fes-Jdid; an ornate gateway leads visitors into the Mellah and the market place. The newest area of Fez, established by the French, offers a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

      Why Go?
Travel to Fez for an authentic and traditional taste of Moroccan life. Wander through the city’s ancient medina to experience the sights and sounds of a busy market place. Sample krachel and try glazed dates from a street vendor and marvel over imposing yet crumbling architecture.

      When To Go?
Fez has a seasonal climate which means cool winters and hot days in the summer months of July-September. Nights in Morocco are always cold and locals wrap up against temperatures of 10°C. The high temperatures of the summer mid-day sun may be too much for some travellers. October enjoys pleasant temperatures of 20°C and is considered the most popular time to visit.

      How To Get There?
Fez is served by Fes-Saïss Airport (FEZ) offering flights across the continent from Morocco. Direct flights are available from European airports including Brussels, Alicante, Madrid and Paris Orly. Ryanair operates direct scheduled flights from London Stansted. Passengers can take the ONCF rail service from the airport to the city centre and other Moroccan city’s including Casablanca and Oujda.

      Must See
The Marinid architecture of Fez is one of the city’s must-see attractions. Discover the Dar al-Magana, a 13th century house operating a water clock; watch the brass bowl and weight mechanism during a guided tour. Explore the Bou Inania Madrasa, the only mosque in Morocco to welcome non-Islamic tourists and climb the ancient minaret overlooking the city. Wander around the mosaic courtyard of the University of Al-Karaouine, the oldest university in the world, still in operation to this day.
