With its reputation of being ‘party central’, you wouldn’t expect to find half the island covered in dense woods, olive and fig trees. As birthplace of the rave, neither would you naturally consider it as a good place to take the children. However, away from the bars are the small resorts and coves of the northeast. Santa Eulària d’es Riu, for example, is much quieter and more family-friendly. 

High summer in Ibiza is geared towards days spent on the soft, sandy beaches and nights spent dancing til dawn at the latest superclub or disco palace, but there’s plenty to be getting on with if this is not your thing. Charter a boat and drift for the day; visit the salt pans at sunset; go paintballing or learn to kite-surf or enjoy a romantic candlelit meal in the Old Town.

If you want to party, head for Ibiza in mid-summer. Millions descend on its sandy beaches and all-night clubs and pubs every year. On the fringes of the high season you can explore Ibiza’s other treasures – Ibiza Old Town with its twisting lanes; whitewashed villages, wildflowers, carnivals, jazz festivals and quieter beaches.

When to go to Ibiza?

Ibiza has plenty to offer outside the party season and the weather stays mild throughout the year. Rainfall’s not an issue – the locals believe it only ever rains 3 days in a row! Summer starts in May, with temperatures in the 20s, building to the mid-30s in July and August. May and October are beautiful times to visit Ibiza as the beaches are deserted, the weather’s still warm and the island is fresh and green.

How to get to Ibiza?

Ibiza is served by Aeroport d’Eivissa, 7km southwest of the capital. Direct flights are available from all the main UK airports, and several low-cost airlines offer cheap deals throughout the year.

Must see attractions in Ibiza

When you’ve had your fill of sunbathing and watersports, head for the shade of Can Marça Caves. Take a moped up to the cobbled heights of Dalt Vila and admire the views from the ramparts and terraces, or enjoy a candlelit dinner in the medieval castle. Kids will love the island’s scenic tour train, water slide park, go-karting and hair-raising Twister Jet. Don’t leave Ibiza without visiting a Hippy Market where you’ll find great clothes, jewellery and maybe even a grey-haired original hippy!
