The sexy and sophisticated home of the tango

Buenos Aires is the exciting capital of Argentina. The city was built by European immigrants from Spain, Italy and France and with its attractive colonial architecture, wide boulevards and street cafés you can be forgiven for thinking you are in any one of the European Latin capitals. Buenos Aires is the home of the tango and there is an undeniably upbeat rhythm to life in Argentina's capital. With all kinds of cultural attractions, an incredible array of bars, restaurants and superb nightclubs, Buenos Aires is an exotic blend of all the best European capitals in a South American setting. You may choose to split up a holiday in Buenos Aires with a trip to the popular Mar del Plata beach resort, on the south coast of Argentina, a favourite getaway for locals.

      When to Go?
Buenos Aires is generally hot throughout the year, and being in the southern hemisphere, temperatures hit their peak in the city between December and February when the mercury can tip over the forty degrees Celsius mark. The cooler months are between May and September, which is also when the city records its lowest rainfall, so spring, autumn and winter are pleasant times to visit - although Buenos Aires is simply superb all year round!

      How to get there?
For flights to Buenos Aires, British Airways are the only carrier offering direct flights, although several other carriers can get you there with a stop-off on the way. For example Lufthansa fly from London to Frankfurt before flying on to Buenos Aires, and Air France, as you might expect, make their stop in Paris. Ezeiza Ministro Pistarini International Airport is 14 miles southwest of the city.

      Must see
History-lovers will appreciate the impressive colonial architecture of the city such as the Cabildo, the former Spanish town hall, which houses a museum. Like the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires has become something of a tourist attraction, with flamboyant tombs and monuments for Argentina's rich and famous, including the grave of Eva Peron. Head to the Plaza Dorrego in the Artist’s Quarter, where the elegant shops and bars surround the square, and a real Argentine tango is liable to break out at any time! Buenos Aires National History Museum and Museum of Modern Art are also both nearby.
