A Renaissance City on the Dalmatian Coast

Dubrovnik sits in an enviable position overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the south of Dalmatia. This Croatian city has a dramatic history of sieges and battles; discover the ancient buildings, walls and statues by walking around the Old Town district. Dating from the 16th century, Sponza Palace is the current home to the National Archives. Book an appointment to view manuscripts, declarations and artefacts from the Renaissance period. Climb the ornate Gothic staircase of The Rector’s Palace and tour the museum. Spend time in the Arboretum Trsteno, the oldest arboretum in the world, and learn about rare plant life. Join the crowds as they follow the mile long wall that runs around the city and rest on the steps under the Roland Statue. Take a tour of the Franciscan Monastery, once completely destroyed by an earthquake, now restored to its former glory and a fine example of the Romanesque style.

      Why Go?
For a relaxing getaway in the sun, take a trip to Dubrovnik. Idyllic coves and attractive coastline make for a peaceful retreat from modern life. Stroll around the Old Town to see historic buildings and monuments. Browse the markets and enjoy a seafood dish in one of the harbour restaurants.

      When to Go?
Dubrovnik experiences a typical Mediterranean climate, with mild wet winters and hot summers. Winds from the Adriatic coast can be strong and cold between October and April so pack a jumper. The summers are considered the best time to visit Dubrovnik with average temperatures of 27°C and long light evenings. Thunderstorms can occur at any point in the year and appear suddenly. Autumn and winter are the quietest periods for tourists.

      How to Get There?
Dubrovnik is served by Dubrovnik Airport also known as Cilipi Airport. It is located approximately 20km (12 miles) from Dubrovnik city centre. Fly from several UK airports including: Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, London Gatwick and Heathrow with stop-over flights from Munich, Zagreb and Vienna. Passengers can take the public bus from the airport terminal to the main bus station in Dubrovnik. Taxis can be booked from the desk inside the airport.

      Must See
Dubrovnik is a city of ancient memorials and a rich historical past. Some of the most impressive and somewhat hidden sights of this area can be found on a small island seen from the shore. Take a boat from the Old Harbour over to Lokrum and explore the fortress and monastery. Legend has it that this island was the refuge of Richard the Lionheart in 1192. Stroll around the botanical gardens and take in the scenery. Lokrum is also home to a naturist beach which can get quite busy during the summer.
